Excellence as a
Primary Stroke Center
St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center is
the first hospital in the state to be granted certification as a
Primary Stroke Center by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of
Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), the nation's oldest and largest
standards-setting and accrediting organization in healthcare. St.
Joseph's received the designation from JCAHO following a thorough
analysis of the hospital's Stroke Center in April 2006. "St.
Joseph's has the highest percentage in the state for treating acute
stroke patients," says Dr. Marc Malkoff, director of Neurovascular
and Neurocritical Care at St. Joseph's. "This certification tells
us that we are meeting JCAHO's criteria for providing expert care
to our stroke patients." St. Joseph's provides a
comprehensive stroke program that includes cutting-edge research, a
24-hour stroke team, rehabilitation, professional education and
community programs. St. Joseph's is also recognized as a designated
Stroke Center by the American Heart Association.
